Advantages and Limitations of EDM
-
Ultra-precise Dimension
EDM erosion achieves ultra-tight tolerance for intricate parts that ordinary machining cannot reach. Sparking processing keeps stable accuracy even for tiny slots and deep inner cavities.
-
Processes Superhard Metals
It easily machines quenched steel, carbide and all conductive high-hardness alloy components. Material hardness brings no processing barriers unlike cutting with solid tools.
-
Only for Conductive Materials
Non-conductive plastic and ceramic workpieces cannot be finished by EDM spark erosion. Alternative machining methods are required for insulating raw material parts.
-
Comparatively Low EfficiencySmall material removal per discharge leads to longer cycle time for large-size parts. EDM is mostly used for small-batch precision finishing instead of mass rough machining.
